Abstract

The growth of Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) has transformed how young consumers connect purchasing decisions with their ability to pay. Easy activation, integration with e-commerce, promotions, and deferred payment can provide liquidity benefits, yet these features may also obscure cost perception and encourage consumption beyond actual needs. This study analyzes consumptive behavior among Generation Z BNPL users from the perspective of Prophetic hadith and formulates an ethical framework for BNPL use in the digital financial ecosystem. It employs qualitative library research and a thematic (mawḍū’ī) approach to hadiths concerning wealth management, debt, responsibility, wastefulness, transactional honesty, and the prevention of harm. Studies on BNPL, consumer behavior, financial literacy, regulation, and digital finance serve as secondary data. The findings show that consumptive BNPL use emerges from the interaction of deferred payment, reduced pain of paying, impulse buying, digital promotion, weak self-control, and fragmented repayment obligations. Prophetic traditions do not treat debt as categorically prohibited, but attach serious moral weight to repayment intention, capacity to fulfill obligations, protection of dependents, and avoidance of wasting wealth. Accordingly, the prophetic critique should not target BNPL technology itself, but excessive consumption, unplanned debt, manipulative persuasive design, and harmful collection practices. The study proposes a Prophetic Responsible BNPL framework consisting of genuine need assessment, repayment capacity, cost transparency, impulse control, debt limits, and provider accountability. This framework shifts the discussion from a binary halal–haram judgment toward responsible financial conduct and consumer protection.
